CAMPBELL, California, December 18,1991--Mountain Network Solutions, Inc., an industry leader in tape backup for mission-critical personal computers and LANs, today announced that it has begun volume shipments of the FileSafe 8500. Mountain's FileSafe 8500 is the first tape drive that attaches to the Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) embedded AT interface that is found in most of the PCs manufactured today. The IDE interface can support two devices: an IDE hard disk and Mountain's tape drive. The FileSafe 8500 is a "zero slot" solution because it doesn't require an additional expansion slot for a separate tape controller card, leaving the slot available for other uses. The FileSafe 8500 also takes advantage of the high speed of the IDE bus for backup rates of up to 8 megabytes per minute on fast PCs. The tape drive can be configured for use in either a 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" drive bay. -------------------------------------------------------- NETWORLD, Boston, MA -- February 11, 1992 Mountain Network Solutions, Inc., an industry leader in tape backup subsystems, extends the capacity of its data cartridge tape backup line with the FileSafe 71000. The FileSafe 71000 is the highest capacity tape subsystem of the FileSafe 7000 family storing 1 gigabyte of data on a single data cartridge. The fast SCSI interface provides a backup rate of 10 MB per minute. The FileSafe 71000 has Quick File Access for rapid file retrieval from anywhere on the tape cartridge. The SCSI interface allows additional units to be daisy-chained for increased capacity, when required. Users of Mountain's data cartridge drives can migrate to the FileSafe 71000 easily because of the ability to read all the way back to 60MB tape cartridges. Newer formats like those found in the 150MB and 525MB drives can be written for interchange with the installed base of Mountain tape drives. The FileSafe 71000 is the next logical step for DC600 cartridge users who need higher capacity storage and compatibility with lower capacity formats. The FileSafe 71000 comes complete with Mountain's award winning FileSafe software, FileTalk, installation and operation manuals, controller card, cables, and DC9000 data cartridge. Mountain's award winning FileSafe software is DOS and Novell NetWare compatible. FileTalk is the software that provides workstation backup on a local area network. "We are committed to providing the best data storage solutions for our customers. Data cartridge technology has a proven track record for reliability and performance. Now we have the capacity to meet our customer's needs", said Dr. William Kunz, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at Mountain. The FileSafe 71000 will begin shipping early in Q2-92. The suggested retail price for the AT compatible external system is $3,995 and $3,495 for the internal system. IBM PS/2 Micro Channel compatible subsystems are priced $100 higher, respectively. The FileSafe 71000 will be available through Mountain's worldwide network of dealers and distributors. The FileSafe 4000, FileSafe 8000Plus, and newest addition, the IDE interface FileSafe 8500 have had compatibility with previous versions of Novell NetWare 286 and NetWare Lite. Now the ability to backup Novell 3.11 network security and trustee information, that was only possible with Mountain's high end tape subsystems, is available in the entire mini-cartridge family. The capacity and price of the mini-cartridge tape subsystems has contributed to their popularity in small to medium LANs. Mountain has enhanced its QIC-40 and QIC-80 product offerings with proprietary features such as the MACH2 controller and Mountain's unique "Format-on-the-Fly" which eliminates having to pre-format mini-cartridges before use. Data compression can double the capacity of these drives so that a file server backup can be held on a single mini-cartridge. "Mountain has a good reputation for supporting Novell's network operating systems. We are pleased to be able to deliver the additional features our customers' require throughout our entire product line", said Dr. William Kunz, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at Mountain. The FileSafe software version 5.2.5-TD, will be available immediately for downloading from Mountain's bulletin board service for registered users of Mountain's FileSafe tape subsystems free of charge. Users requiring diskettes and manuals will be able to order the upgrade kits from Mountain, directly. The cost for the upgrade is $50 plus shipping and handling. Novell NetWare administrators have a need for more effective file server storage management tools. Mountain's FileWizard for FileSafe combines the best of Knozall's FileWizard product for analyzing file usage and creating file migration jobs with Mountain's powerful FileSafe tape subsystems. Now files can be migrated from NetWare 2.2 and 3.11 file servers automatically to a FileSafe tape subsystem. Files migrated onto tape can be tracked with the librarian that is part of the FileWizard product and restored transparently through Mountain's FileSafe tape software. Jobs can be created and queued for delayed execution on a network workstation with the FileSafe tape subsystem. "FileWizard enhances Mountain's FileSafe software for true server grooming and file migration requirements", said Dr. William Kunz, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at Mountain. This product is another in a series of products co-developed with leading technology software firms in conjunction with Mountain's FileSafe tape backup subsystems. "We have been looking to team up with a backup company to provide the best file server management system. Mountain's FileSafe utilities complement our FileWizard product perfectly", said Don Lundell, President of Knozall Systems. "Storage management is more than just backup and restore. Mountain is showing once again their leadership by providing an integrated solution with Knozall's innovative technology. The strength of this combination provides an urgently needed network service", said Michael Peterson of Peripheral Strategies, Inc. "The idea for this product was to address the archiving needs of Mountain's large installed base on Novell networks. Mountain's FileWizard for FileSafe is the perfect addition for Mountain's FileSafe users because they work so well together", said Dr. Daniel Stromska, Director of Advanced Technologies at Mountain. Mountain FileWizard for FileSafe is compatible with all versions of FileSafe tape subsystems and software. Tapes created with FileWizard for FileSafe can be used with the stand-alone FileSafe tape software. Mountain FileWizard for FileSafe has an introductory price of $395 for the single server version of the software. The three server version is $595, the eight server version is $995. FileWizard for FileSafe will be shipping in April, 1992 and will be available through Mountain's international network of distributors and resellers.
